The Nov. 3, 2020 election will be historic:

  • The first U.S. election to be held during a pandemic. The implications of holding a free and fair election will require massive preparation for absentee and mail-in voting, and huge infrastructure investments to ensure safe voting.

  • The first Virginia election held after a Democratic legislature liberalized election laws, eliminating both the need for a photo ID before voting and having a state-accepted reason for voting absentee.

Election 2020

NEW: Absentee voting

Protect yourself, you community, and your vote by ordering your absentee ballot now. Have your social security number (and driver’s license for an online application), specify the General Election ballot for Nov. 3rd, and because of the pandemic, “illness” applies to all voters. (After July 1st no reason is required).

  • Lexington residents can pick up a form at Lexington City Hall: 300 E Washington St.

  • Rockbridge residents can call the Voter Registrar’s office: 540-463-7203.

When your ballot arrives in September, fill it out, attach a stamp, and mail it back.

Keep the election safe by voting early this year. Virginia is counting on you.

NEW: voting rights, days, hours

  1. Starting July 1, you no longer need an excuse to vote absentee.

  2. Any transaction with the state Department of Motor Vehicles leads to your automatic registration as a voter if you are a U.S. citizen.

  3. You may start voting 45 days before Nov. 3 Election Day – Sept. 19 – without any excuse.

  4. Nov. 3 Election Day is a Virginia holiday.

  5. You no longer need a photo ID to cast a ballot.

  6. You may vote on Election Day starting at 7 a.m. until 8 p.m., a one-hour extension.
